According to my parents, I learned how to read when I was four years old. All I know is, I don’t remember a time when I didn’t read. I do remember the first story I wrote. It was a mashup of Thumbelina and Pippi Longstocking, illustrated with original art. I was six. I want to say I’ve moved on from fairy tales since then, but I’m not entirely sure that’s accurate.
I have a deep love of stories. Always have. I consume massive amounts of books, movies, series, and computer games. Even music and dance and – though in all fairness rarely so – art. Anything that tells a story.
A well-told story is a way to approach a subject from a different angle, to see things from a new perspective. Imagine how things could be or might have been. To better understand ourselves and the world around us. And some days it’s a way to leave the world behind and go someplace else for a while.
Speculative fiction has a special place in my heart. In particular horror, mysteries, and science fiction. My dad’s bookshelves were stocked with writers like Stephen King and Robert A. Heinlein. I helped myself early on and that was it. I was hooked. To this day I remember picking up his copy of O-zone by Paul Theroux – dystopia way before it became trendy. I was blown away. While I will read anything that is well-written, speculative fiction remains my go-to genre.
I was born in 1977 in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, Sweden. I am bilingual – Swedish and English – and currently live in the southwestern part of Sweden with my husband, our two delightful teenagers (I know, it sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s true several times a week), and three cats. We previously lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Previously in life, I was one of those people who never seemed to move past college. I studied a range of subjects from English and Literature to Archaeology and Engineering, before finally pursuing a B.S. in Informatics with Graphic Design. When I’m not writing or reading, I work with my husband running our own IT business.
I write under a pseudonym, A. I. Stark, which is a confluence of my initials and my grandmother’s maiden name.
Hidden Within is my first finished novel. I am currently hard at work on my second novel, Saving Grace.
